Definition

A smart thermostat is a Wi-Fi-connected control that learns your schedule, adjusts temperatures automatically, and can be managed from your phone. Beyond convenience, it can run setbacks while you're away or asleep and report runtime patterns. Proper installation matters — many homes need a common (C) wire to power the thermostat reliably.

Why this matters for your home

Used well, a smart thermostat trims heating and cooling costs without sacrificing comfort. But aggressive settings or a missing C-wire can cause erratic behavior or short cycling, so it pays to have it set up correctly for your specific system.
