Manual J is the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) standard for calculating a home's heating and cooling loads. It accounts for square footage, insulation, windows, orientation, air leakage, and local climate to determine exactly how much capacity a home needs — the foundation for correctly sizing a furnace, AC, or heat pump.
Why this matters for your home
Replacing equipment with 'the same size as before' repeats whatever sizing mistake was made originally. A proper Manual J prevents the comfort and efficiency problems that come from oversized or undersized systems, and it's the right first step before any major install in a Grand Rapids home.
